This text is part of the Weather Preparedness & Resilience Toolbox developed by the YOUROPE Event Safety (YES) Group within YOUROPE’s 3F project (Future-Fit Festivals). It is aimed at everyone involved in planning, building, and operating open-air events. It helps festivals and other outdoor events become truly weather-ready by offering both practical and research-based resources as well as background information on weather and climate. Learn how to design safer and more weather-resilient outdoor events.
Weather Toolbox – State of the Climate Update for COP30
World Meteorological Organization “State of the Climate Update for COP30 (wmo)This is an official WMO update summarizing key climate indicators and recent trends, positioned as a reference document for COP30 decision-makers.
Key climate findings
- The period 2015–2025 is described as the warmest 11‑year span in the instrumental record, with every year exceeding previous high-temperature benchmarks.
- For January–August 2025, global mean temperature is reported at about 1.42 °C above pre‑industrial levels, indicating continued acceleration of warming.
- Concentrations of major heat‑trapping greenhouse gases and ocean heat content both reached record highs in 2024 and continued increasing in 2025.
- Arctic winter sea‑ice extent hit its lowest level on record, while Antarctic sea‑ice remained well below average, and long‑term sea‑level rise continued despite short‑term natural variability.
The update notes widespread extreme events up to August 2025, including intense rainfall, flooding, heatwaves, and wildfires with cascading effects on food systems and livelihoods.
The WMO emphasizes the expansion of early‑warning services and climate services as critical tools for saving lives and building resilience to escalating extremes.
The report’s key messages are that the climate system is undergoing record warming driven by record greenhouse gas levels, with accelerating impacts on ice, seas, and societies, and that this evidence must anchor COP30 decisions.
