Sống ở Berlin

Sống ở Berlin is an annual international cultural festival in Berlin-Lichtenberg that works at the interface between Vietnamese and German cultural influences and artistic perceptions. Over a weekend in summer, the outdoor area of the Dong Xuan Center, the largest Asian trade centre in Germany, and its event hall are used for music, readings, podcasts, cinema and performing arts. The focus is on the work of a young generation of artists who grew up in Berlin but are influenced by both cultural worlds through their parents’ and grandparents’ generation, many of whom came to Germany from Vietnam as guest and contract workers and stayed after the fall of the Berlin Wall.

More than 40,000 people of Vietnamese origin live in Berlin, with more than 6000 in Lichtenberg alone. The Dong Xuan Center is the largest Asian trading centre and cultural meeting place there, embedded in the emerging and growing creative quarter on Herzbergstraße. From its beginnings as an Asian trading centre on the outskirts of the city, on the site of the former VEB Elektrokohle, the Dong Xuan Center has developed into an international place where Vietnamese culture has always played a role. But at the latest since the opening of the event venue in the rooms of the former district cultural centre and later techno club, the Dong Xuan Center has also increasingly opened up to a wider spectrum of Berlin’s urban society and popular culture.

In 2023, the Vietnamese-German Pop Festival took place there for the first time, attracting 3,500 visitors. In 2024, this pilot project developed into a four-day festival supported by many institutions and sponsors.
