Database: ‘GENiE – Gender Equality Networks in Europe’

300 projects, 25 countries and one goal: to support gender equality in music. This is the main objective of GENiE (Gender Equality Networks in Europe), an online database created by the gender equality activist and researcher Grace Goodwin and that has been recently launched with the idea to get many more projects on board from now on.

The database features projects ranging from producer courses, radio shows, to festivals and much more, and works as a springboard for collaboration across borders, or finding like-minded people in each country, all whilst working towards the common goal of gender equality in music. In order to help professionals find “a perfect match”, the website can be filtered both by country and/or project type.

The project grew out of Goodwin’s travels to major festivals around Europe, where she realised that project leaders and gender equality activists were not aware of each other’s work. She started collating information on projects she encountered across Europe, reaching out to stakeholders who connected her with project leaders and communities: just a year later, she had already collected a list of more than 300 projects, which encouraged Soundcloud to enlist as the lead supporter of GENiE.

According to the Liverpudlian researcher, “this project is about highlighting the amazing work across Europe that is supporting women who want to take up space in the music industry. GENiE would not have been possible without the people who took the time to talk to me. I was amazed at the variety and number of projects I have found and can’t wait to see the collaborations that take place because of GENIE.”

After its official launch on April 2nd, GENiE has now made an open call to get more projects on board: “Are you working on a project that is supporting gender equality in music? Are we missing a project that you have taken part in? Then submit a project at geniedatabase.com to open doors for future collaboration, networking and funding.”
